Electric Vehicle (EV)

These are vehicles that are powered solely by energy stored in a battery which is used to power an electromechanical device to propel the vehicle. The battery can be recharged at the convenience of the driver. An EV is not classed as a hybrid vehicle..

Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV)

These are electric vehicles that are fitted with an electrical generator. The internal combustion engine (ICE) powers a generator which in turn propels the vehicle when the main battery is depleted. What this means is that the operating range (distance to be travelled) is extended.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)

These are vehicles that use a combination of electric drive and the more traditional ICE.

A light hybrid only uses the electric motor to assist the ICE in acceleration and uses regenerative braking to recharge the energy store.

A full hybrid system can power the vehicle on the electric motor, the ICE or both together. Regenerative braking uses a generator to recharging the energy stores when braking.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

These are hybrid vehicles that can recharge their batteries from an external source in the same manner as electric vehicles.

Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Servicing and MOTs

All electric and hybrid vehicles are still subject to MOT Testing and maintenance servicing.

MOT testing on hybrid and electric vehicle is the same as you would have with any traditional combustion engine.
